Jemimah Rodrigues, one of the standout performers behind the Indian women’s team’s maiden World Cup triumph, is once again at the centre of attention in the Women’s Premier League. Her match-winning 127 against Australia in the semi-final remains one of the defining innings of that campaign.
Ahead of the 2026 WPL auction, Delhi Capitals retained Rodrigues for ₹2.20 crore and further strengthened their squad by signing South African star Laura Wolvaardt. However, the bigger talking point now is leadership, with growing speculation around who will captain the side in the upcoming season.
Delhi Capitals shared a video with a hint
On Monday, Delhi Capitals fuelled the debate by releasing a cryptic video teasing a “special announcement” scheduled for December 23 at 6 PM. The clip shows a briefcase being passed from one person to another across multiple locations before ending with the line, “Delivery coming soon for Delhi Capitals.” The logos of Star Sports and JioHotstar appear at the end, prompting speculation that the announcement could be broadcast live. The video quickly went viral on social media.

Many fans and experts believe the teaser points towards Rodrigues being named Delhi’s new captain in the Women’s Premier League. The theory gained momentum after co-owner Parth Jindal recently stated that the franchise is keen on appointing an Indian player as captain, despite investing in overseas stars like Wolvaardt.
Rodrigues’ numbers further strengthen her case. Across three WPL seasons, she has amassed 507 runs in 27 matches for Delhi, including three half-centuries, underlining her consistency and importance to the franchise.

While a few have speculated that the announcement could concern a leadership change in the men’s team, that scenario appears unlikely. All signs currently suggest that Delhi Capitals may be preparing to hand the reins of their women’s side to Jemimah Rodrigues.
