Colombia secured top spot in Group K after playing out a 0-0 draw against Portugal in their final group-stage match on Saturday. With both sides having already booked their places in the FIFA World Cup knockout stage before kick-off, the contest was all about deciding the group standings.
The result sends Colombia into the Round of 32 as group winners, where they will face Ghana, who suffered a 2-1 defeat to Croatia earlier in the day. Portugal, meanwhile, finished second and will meet Croatia in the knockout stage.
Goalkeepers shine in entertaining stalemate
Although neither team managed to find the net, the match produced several exciting moments. Portugal came close to breaking the deadlock in the opening half when Bruno Fernandes tested Colombia goalkeeper Camilo Vargas, who produced an important save.

At the other end, Portugal goalkeeper Diogo Costa was kept busy throughout the game, making six saves. That tally exceeded the combined number of saves he made during Portugal's opening two group-stage fixtures.
Portugal's mixed campaign continues
Portugal entered the expanded 48-team World Cup among the favourites but experienced an uneven group stage. They began with a surprise 1-1 draw against Congo DR before responding in style with a 5-0 victory over Uzbekistan.
Cristiano Ronaldo, who was criticised after failing to score in the opening match, bounced back by netting twice against Uzbekistan and became the first player to score in six FIFA World Cups.
By finishing second in Group K, Portugal move to the opposite side of the knockout bracket from Argentina. As a result, a potential meeting between longtime rivals Ronaldo and Lionel Messi, widely expected to be appearing in their final World Cups, can now only take place if both teams reach the final.

James Rodríguez reaches Colombian milestone
Colombia returned to the World Cup after missing out on qualification in 2022. They began their campaign with a 3-1 win over Uzbekistan before edging Congo DR 1-0.
The match also marked James Rodríguez's 11th appearance at a men's World Cup, making him Colombia's all-time appearance leader at the tournament ahead of Freddy Rincón and Carlos Valderrama, who each played 10 matches.
Played at the Miami Dolphins' home stadium, the match drew a sellout crowd of 64,478. Among those in attendance were Valderrama, FIFA president Gianni Infantino, FBI director Kash Patel, US Secretary of State Marco Rubio, NFL quarterback Jameis Winston, NBA star Jimmy Butler, actor Matt Damon and former NFL receiver Chad Johnson. Large watch parties were also organised across South Florida for fans unable to secure tickets.
