A magnitude 6.0 earthquake struck near the east coast of Honshu, Japan, on Saturday night. Authorities are monitoring the situation as residents report tremors across multiple regions.

According to the National Center for Seismology (NCS), the earthquake occurred at 8:51 pm IST on October 4, 2025, at a depth of 50 km. The epicenter was near the east coast of Honshu, at latitude 37.45 N and longitude 141.52 E.

Japan, located on the Pacific Ring of Fire, is highly seismic, experiencing frequent tremors and occasional destructive earthquakes.

While no immediate casualties have been reported, authorities are assessing possible damage. The Shindo scale, used in Japan to measure seismic intensity, ranges from zero to seven. Earthquakes measured at Shindo five or six can damage houses, roads, and infrastructure, while lower-level tremors are usually mild.

Japan’s preparedness and past quakes

Japan has one of the densest seismic monitoring networks in the world, enabling quick recording of earthquakes. The nation has faced major quakes in recent decades, including the 2011 Tohoku earthquake and tsunami, the 2024 Noto earthquake, and the 2004 Chuetsu earthquake.

Shindo levels five and above may require precautionary measures such as evacuation or securing homes. Japan’s disaster management agencies continuously monitor seismic activity to provide early warnings and ensure rapid response.

Residents are advised to follow official updates and remain indoors if possible. Meanwhile, reports suggest authorities continue to track aftershocks and coordinate emergency services to minimize risk to life and property.
