Karnataka Chief Minister D K Shivakumar on Thursday distributed portfolios among the 13 ministers inducted into the Cabinet a day earlier, retaining the finance and personnel and administrative reforms departments for himself, even as the move reportedly stirred unease within the ruling Congress.
The allocation was notified by Governor Thaawarchand Gehlot.

Portfolio chessboard, neatly arranged
According to the notification, Deputy Chief Minister G Parameshwara has been given revenue along with youth empowerment and sports.
Priyank Kharge will handle home while continuing with information technology and biotechnology, and several ministers kept their previous assignments from the Siddaramaiah government.
K J George retained energy and gained tourism, M B Patil kept large and medium industries, Satish Jarkiholi remained public works minister, K H Muniyappa retained food and civil supplies, and Sharan Prakash Patil continued with medical education.
Fresh assignments with a touch of continuity
Other assignments included Krishna Byre Gowda, who has been given Bengaluru urban development under the Greater Bengaluru Authority, and Ramalinga Reddy, who has been allotted major and medium.
Bairathi Suresh will head transport, U T Khader has been given health, Yathindra Siddaramaiah has got urban development, and Eshwar Khandre has been allotted rural development.
Khader had earlier served as health minister from 2013 to 2018 and was Assembly Speaker until May 2026.
Word from the helm, duly delivered
Shivakumar had said earlier in the day that the allocation process was complete.
“Portfolio allocation has already been completed. The governor will issue a notification tonight,” he said, adding that he had followed the Congress leadership’s instructions while finalizing the distribution.
He also responded to criticism over the lack of women in the Cabinet by saying, “Let them (BJP) wait; there are a lot of vacancies. Last time, too, there were no women in the first round. We are all there.”

Congress sources said the delay in allocation was linked to dissatisfaction among some ministers over the departments offered to them.
Ramalinga Reddy had been hoping for the Bengaluru development portfolio and had reportedly reminded Shivakumar and former chief minister Siddaramaiah of an assurance made in 2023 that he would be considered for it in a future Cabinet reshuffle.
Shivakumar was keen on giving that department to Krishna Byre Gowda.

The Cabinet curtain may rise once more
The portfolio announcement came amid indications that the ministry could see further expansion, with sources suggesting a second phase of Cabinet expansion may take place on June 10, though the Congress leadership has not officially confirmed any schedule.
Shivakumar also said Rahul Gandhi would visit Bengaluru for the filing of Rajya Sabha nomination papers by party president Mallikarjun Kharge, while four candidates for the Legislative Council were set to file nominations on Friday.
