The opposition has moved a no-confidence motion against Lok Sabha Speaker Om Birla. The notice, submitted to the Secretary General on Tuesday, has been signed by 114 MPs. Trinamool Congress MPs, however, did not sign the motion. Earlier, Trinamool’s Lok Sabha leader Abhishek Banerjee had said that the party would support the motion if Congress gave the Speaker three days’ notice.

Abhishek Banerjee said that if the no-confidence motion is brought on today instead of after the mandatory three-day notice, his party’s position would be to write to the Speaker. He stressed that if someone makes a mistake, they must be given an opportunity to correct it, otherwise there would be no difference between them and the BJP.

Congress has raised the motion citing the Speaker’s role in allegedly making false allegations against women MPs, unjustly suspending eight opposition MPs, and not allowing opposition members to speak in sessions. The NDA, in turn, has questioned Congress’s motives and role in the matter.
