Congress leader Meenakshi Natarajan has found herself in the national spotlight after her nomination for the Rajya Sabha election from Madhya Pradesh was rejected during scrutiny. The development has sparked a political dispute between the Congress and the BJP ahead of the June 18 polls, with the opposition party alleging that democratic norms are being compromised.

While the controversy has drawn fresh attention to the election process, it has also renewed interest in Natarajan's long political journey within the Congress.

Her association with senior Congress leader Rahul Gandhi dates to the period when efforts were underway to restructure the party's youth wing and student organisations. During that phase, Natarajan emerged as a trusted party functionary and gradually took on larger responsibilities within the organisation.

In 2008, she was appointed an All India Congress Committee (AICC) secretary, a role that further strengthened her position within the party's leadership structure.

Breaking a BJP bastion in Madhya Pradesh

Natarajan achieved one of the most significant milestones of her political career in the 2009 Lok Sabha election. Contesting from Madhya Pradesh's Mandsaur constituency, she defeated the BJP and ended the party's six-term hold over the seat.

She represented Mandsaur in Parliament from 2009 to 2014. However, she was unable to retain the constituency in the following two general elections and lost to BJP leader Sudhir Gupta in both 2014 and 2019.

Despite those electoral setbacks, she continued to remain influential within the Congress organisation and was involved in key party affairs.

Her recent Rajya Sabha nomination brought her back into the political spotlight, making her one of the most discussed Congress leaders as the party prepares for the upcoming Upper House election.
