Surendranath College in Kolkata has once again come under the spotlight after sharp swords were recovered from a room adjacent to the students' union room, days after cash-filled briefcases, a firearm and other items were allegedly found on the campus.
According to sources, the weapons were discovered when college staff opened a locked room allotted to the National Service Scheme (NSS). The lock was broken to gain access to the room. During a search, the swords were found hidden under a table.
The latest recovery comes amid an ongoing controversy surrounding items found at the college in recent days.
Weapons found during room search
College staff reportedly entered the NSS room as part of a routine inspection. During the search, they recovered multiple sharp weapons from beneath a table inside the room.
Following the discovery, members of the Akhil Bharatiya Vidyarthi Parishad (ABVP) alleged that the campus had become a hub of illegal activities and demanded a deeper investigation.
Reacting to the incident, ABVP state media in-charge Ananta Barui said, "It is clear that Trinamool leaders, from the youngest to the oldest, used girls to make a living and there was a system of swords and scythes for those who opposed them. You will not understand whether it is a college or a 5-star hotel. ABVP workers will take responsibility and investigate the immoral activities going on in every college from the bottom of the earth."
No evidence has yet been publicly produced linking any political organisation to the recovered weapons.
Earlier recovery of cash sparks probe
The latest development comes shortly after two briefcases containing bundles of cash were recovered from an almirah inside the college union room. A significant portion of the money was reportedly damaged by termites after being stored for a long period.
After receiving information, officers from Muchipara Police Station reached the campus and launched an investigation.
Following the cash recovery, police registered a case under the Arms Act against two Trinamool Congress leaders, Debashis Bandyopadhyay and Paritosh Dutta. As part of the investigation, Paritosh Dutta was later arrested from Purba Bardhaman.
Police are continuing their investigation into the recoveries made on the college campus.
