Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Wednesday became India’s longest continuously serving elected Prime Minister, completing 4,399 days in office. The milestone marks 12 years since he first took charge of the country on May 26, 2014.

While India’s first Prime Minister, Jawaharlal Nehru served for a longer overall period, he initially assumed office before India’s first general election and remained in the post until he died in 1964. Former Prime Minister Indira Gandhi served nearly 16 years in office, but across two separate terms.

To mark the occasion, leaders of the National Democratic Alliance (NDA) are expected to pass a resolution congratulating Modi at a meeting chaired by him in New Delhi. The gathering will be attended by 72 alliance leaders, and NDA members are set to felicitate the Prime Minister for his leadership and governance record.

Government highlights achievements across sectors

Over the last 12 years, the Modi government has overseen major initiatives in welfare delivery, digital payments, infrastructure development, defence reforms and national security. The administration has also navigated the country through the Covid-19 pandemic and multiple global conflicts.

Reflecting on the journey, Modi said, “With the blessings of 1.4 billion fellow citizens and the spirit of nation first, we have spared no effort in empowering our youth, women, and our farmer brothers and sisters. It is the result of these tireless efforts that today, from infrastructure to the digital revolution, the country has gained a new identity on the global stage.”

The Prime Minister returned to office with a larger mandate in 2019 and secured a third consecutive term in 2024.

BJP cites welfare, economy and security gains

BJP president Nitin Nabin said that the government’s tenure has been defined by development and public welfare. He pointed to poverty alleviation measures, housing schemes, healthcare coverage, Mudra loans and sanitation initiatives among the key achievements.

The party also highlighted growth in defence exports, overall exports and security measures aimed at tackling terrorism and insurgency. Senior leaders including Rajnath Singh, Amit Shah, JP Nadda, Dharmendra Pradhan, Piyush Goyal and Ashwini Vaishnaw attended the event.

Union minister Kiren Rijiju described the achievement as a proud moment for the party. “I believe the work accomplished for our country during this tenure will be etched in golden letters, marking the time when, under Modi ji’s leadership, India took its first steps towards becoming a Viksit Bharat.”
