The heavy downpour on Tuesday has reduced Kolkata to a battlefield due to flooding, and the net was abuzz with a number of videos. Among the numerous clips that are circulating around, one of them, a snake swimming in floodwaters with a fish in its mouth, has attracted netizens’ attention.
The video, shot from inside a house, shows the reptile moving effortlessly across a submerged street, holding onto its prized catch. The clip begins with an overlay that reads, “Just Kolkata things.”
The Instagram user summed it up with a tongue-in-cheek caption, “Kolkata and its little perks, right before Durga Pujo.”
Many identify the reptile as a Checkered keelback, locally known as Jol Dhora. The sight of a snake clutching a fish struck a chord with Bengalis everywhere, given the community’s well-known love for fish-based meals.
Netizens called it a 'Bengali snake'
One user quipped, “Bro proved that he is Bengali.”
“My ex bringing me fish fry,” another quipped.
“Bangali saanp ????,” another commented. One chimed in, saying, “Snake is also Bengalified.”
“Bangali shap bole kotha,” one witty user joked.
This isn’t the only video from the city that has gone viral after the deluge. Another widely circulated clip shows a luxury Rolls-Royce Ghost abandoned in the middle of a waterlogged road. Many comments read like “Lord Alto zindabad.”
Notably, the huge cloud burst and waterlogging came just days before Durga Puja, the grandest annual festival for Bengalis. Businesses, residential areas, and major roads have been heavily affected.
Viral footage shows office-goers wading through waist-deep water, neighborhoods submerged, and vehicles stranded across the ‘City of Joy.’ The tragic flood-like situation claimed at least 10.
