PM Narendra Modi mourns Asha Bhosle’s death, remembering her timeless voice and saying he will “forever cherish” their interactions as India bids farewell to a music legend.

Legendary playback singer Asha Bhosle passed away in Mumbai on Sunday at the age of 92, leaving the nation in mourning. Prime Minister Narendra Modi expressed deep grief and paid tribute to the iconic singer, remembering her as one of India’s most versatile and beloved voices.

PM Modi remembers ‘an extraordinary musical journey’

Taking to X, PM Modi wrote, “Deeply saddened by the passing of Asha Bhosle Ji, one of the most iconic and versatile voices India has ever known.” He noted that her decades-long contribution to music enriched India’s cultural heritage and resonated with audiences across generations.

Highlighting her range, he added, “Be it her soulful melodies or vibrant compositions, her voice carried timeless brilliance.” The Prime Minister also recalled his personal interactions with the singer, saying he would always cherish those moments.

Extending condolences, he said her songs would continue to inspire generations and remain etched in people’s lives.

Doctor Prateet Samdani confirmed that the veteran singer had been battling multiple health issues and died due to multi-organ failure. Maharashtra’s Culture Minister Ashish Shelar also announced her passing outside the hospital.

Earlier, her granddaughter Zanai Bhosle had shared that the singer was hospitalised due to extreme exhaustion and a chest infection. The family had requested privacy during her treatment.

Final rites and family statement

Her son Anand Bhosle confirmed the news and shared details of the last rites. The family will allow people to pay their respects at her residence from 11 am on Monday, followed by the final rites at Shivaji Park in Mumbai at 4 pm.

A voice that defined generations

Asha Bhosle began her career in 1943 and went on to become one of the most celebrated voices in Indian music. Known for her versatility, she delivered iconic songs across genres, from peppy numbers like Piya Tu Ab To Aaja to soulful classics like Dil Cheez Kya Hai.

Over her illustrious career, she received two National Film Awards, the Dadasaheb Phalke Award in 2000, and the Padma Vibhushan in 2008. Her legacy continues to live on through her timeless music.
