Legendary playback singer Asha Bhosle, one of the most celebrated voices in Indian music, has passed away at the age of 92. She breathed her last in Mumbai after being admitted to Breach Candy hospital on Saturday following cardiac and respiratory complications.

As per a report by the Hindustan Times, the sources said that the veteran singer had been unwell for the past few months. Her condition deteriorated, and she was rushed to the hospital in a critical state. She was later shifted to the ICU on Saturday night. Her son, Anand, confirmed her demise on Sunday afternoon. The family will perform the last rites on Monday.

A career that shaped generations

Asha Bhosle’s journey in music spanned several decades, making her one of the most prolific and versatile singers in Indian cinema. Born in 1933 into the renowned Mangeshkar family, she began her professional singing career at the age of nine. Her first film song was recorded in 1943.

By the 1950s, she had established herself in Bollywood and steadily rose to become a preferred voice for leading composers. Over time, she built a repertoire that ranged across genres and styles, earning widespread popularity and critical acclaim.

Though she was initially associated with cabaret songs and dance numbers, Bhosle expanded her musical range. Her work in films like Umrao Jaan showcased her ability to render ghazals with finesse. She received seven Filmfare Awards for Best Female Playback Singer and won the National Film Award twice, for “Dil Cheez Kya Hai” from Umrao Jaan and “Mera Kuch Saamaan” from Ijaazat.
