The Indian Air Force is set to once again join one of the world's largest multinational aerial warfare exercises as it heads to Australia for Exercise Pitch Black 2026. Hosted by the Royal Australian Air Force, the three-week drill will be held in Australia's Northern Territory from July 20 to August 7 and will bring together more than 100 aircraft and thousands of military personnel from 20 countries.

Over the years, Exercise Pitch Black has become a key platform for strengthening military cooperation among Indo-Pacific nations, offering realistic combat simulations in a challenging operational environment.

A major test of multinational air combat integration

Exercise Pitch Black is known for replicating demanding battlefield conditions, particularly through large-force employment missions involving multiple air forces operating simultaneously.

A defining feature of the exercise remains its emphasis on night-time flying over vast stretches of sparsely populated terrain, allowing participating nations to conduct complex missions with minimal civilian interference.

Apart from India and Australia, participating countries this year include Canada, France, Japan, the United Kingdom, the United States, South Korea, Singapore, Sweden, Indonesia, Malaysia, Thailand and several other Indo-Pacific partners.

According to Australian officials, the exercise aims to strengthen collective readiness while improving interoperability among partner nations.

Why the exercise matters for India

For the Indian Air Force, the exercise offers both operational and strategic advantages.

According to The Times of India, former Air Marshal Radhakrishnan Radhish has highlighted that multinational drills help Indian personnel exchange best practices, improve cooperation and gain exposure to foreign technologies and operating procedures.

Such interactions also provide valuable insights into equipment used by other countries, which can eventually contribute to India's own indigenous defence development programmes.

Participation also allows the IAF to demonstrate its long-range operational capabilities in demanding scenarios involving advanced air forces from across the world.

India's growing presence at Pitch Black

India has become a regular participant in the exercise, having attended the 2018, 2022 and 2024 editions.

According to The Times of India, during Pitch Black 2024, the IAF deployed its Su-30 MKI multirole fighters alongside a C-17 Globemaster transport aircraft and an IL-78 aerial refuelling aircraft from RAAF Base Darwin.

Those assets enabled India to participate in both offensive and combat support roles while integrating seamlessly with allied air forces.

The 2024 edition involved 4,400 military personnel from 20 countries and served as another step in India's expanding defence engagement in the Indo-Pacific.

A legacy stretching back four decades

First held in 1981 at RAAF Base Williamtown, Exercise Pitch Black has evolved into one of the most prestigious air combat exercises globally.

Its name itself is derived from its signature focus on night-time operations.

The exercise also builds upon Australia's long tradition of multinational military drills in the Northern Territory, tracing its origins to the High-series exercises of the 1960s and Top-series exercises of the 1970s.

Beyond military training, the event also serves as a diplomatic platform, allowing participating nations to strengthen partnerships and reinforce security cooperation across the Indo-Pacific region.
