Mumbai tragedy claims three lives as BEST electric bus crushes crowd in Bhandup

According to officials, the accident occurred while the BEST electric bus was in the process of reversing.

A BEST electric bus reversed into people on Monday, waiting near a Bhandup West railway station bus stop at night. The incident left three dead and many injured. The accident occurred around 10 PM. Police, ambulances, and civic teams reached the scene upon receiving information. Police are investigating how a routine stop turned into a fatal incident.

The incident at Bhandup West

According to Mumbai Police, the accident took place outside Bhandup (West) railway station. Authorities have stated that a BEST bus was reversing near the bus stop when it dashed into people standing in the area. Officials noted that the bus hit around 10 to 12 people during the incident, as per a Hindustan Times report.

A team from the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation, the fire brigade, BEST also reached the location soon after the incident was reported. The area around the bus stop was secured as emergency operations were carried out. Officials suggested that the accident involved an electric bus that is manufactured by Olectra.

The injured were rushed to the hospital, said senior police inspector of Bhandup police station, Balasaheb Pawar. He also added, "At least two people have been crushed under the bus as I can see," according to the HT report.

So far, there has been no official statement on what caused the accident. It remains unclear whether the incident was due to a mechanical failure or human error.
