The FIFA World Cup 2026 draw has produced several competitive groups, but Group L is already attracting attention as the toughest section in the tournament. With England, Croatia, Ghana and Panama drawn together, every team faces a difficult path to the knockout rounds.

England arrive in North America among the favourites to win the title. The Three Lions have been one of the most consistent teams in international football over the past decade, reaching the semi-finals of the 2018 World Cup and finishing runners-up at Euro 2020 and Euro 2024. Under new head coach Thomas Tuchel, England enjoyed a flawless qualifying campaign, winning all their matches without conceding a goal.

England and Croatia headline a competitive group

While England is expected to challenge for the top spot, Croatia remain a major obstacle. The 2018 World Cup finalists have repeatedly exceeded expectations on the global stage and continue to be one of football’s most resilient teams. Their experience in high-pressure matches makes them a dangerous opponent for any side.

The meeting between England and Croatia is likely to be one of the standout fixtures of the group stage, with both nations aiming to secure early control of the standings.

Ghana and Panama are capable of causing upsets

Ghana may not carry the same expectations as England or Croatia, but the African side has a strong World Cup history. The Black Stars reached the quarter-finals in 2010 and have often proved capable of challenging higher-ranked opponents.

Panama completes the group and enters the tournament as underdogs. However, their steady rise in international football and growing experience on the world stage mean they cannot be overlooked.

Unlike many other groups where one or two teams are clear favourites, Group L offers little room for error. England and Croatia may start as the leading contenders, but Ghana and Panama possess enough quality to influence the final standings.

That balance of strength and unpredictability is why Group L is widely being viewed as the closest thing to a “Group of Death” at the 2026 FIFA World Cup.
