Often, when peeling onions, black spots appear. Sometimes long black lines are visible on the onion's surface. Black powder-like substance also comes off on the hands. In most cases, even after scrubbing with water, these black marks do not disappear. Then you unwillingly discard that onion peel. But what exactly are these black marks on onions? Should they really be thrown away? Let's find out.

What are the black marks on onions?

There is no doubt that onions are nutritious. Onions contain fibre, flavonoids, sulfur-rich antioxidants, and various vitamins. Black marks on the surface don't necessarily mean the onion can't be used anymore. However, black marks on onions indicate fungal infection. These black marks appear on onions due to infection by a fungus called Aspergillus niger.

What harm can eating fungus-infected onions cause?

Black spots on onions mean fungal infection. This fungus exists in soil. If this fungus reaches inside the onion, the onion becomes soft and unfit for consumption. The parts of the onion with black spots cannot be eaten.

This type of black fungus produces ochratoxin. This is a type of toxin. If this ochratoxin regularly enters the body even in small amounts, it can cause serious harm to the body. There is a risk of liver and kidney damage. Even those with diabetes should avoid such onions.

How to use onions after removing the fungus?

If the black fungus is only on the onion's surface, discard that peel and use the rest. Sometimes the black powder or marks wash away with water. You can use such onions too. But if the black spots reach inside the onion and consequently the onion becomes soft, it's better not to use it in cooking.
