Dark spots appearing around the lips are medically termed as pigmentation. This, in clinical terms, is called melasma. Physical factors may be one of the causes of this problem, but age can be a factor as well. One may even develop pigmentation from exposure to sunlight or UV rays. This problem cannot be prevented without applying sunscreen. However, a sunburn or tan must not be confused with melasma. According to doctors, one of the triggering aspects of pigmentation is hormonal changes; hence, expectant or new mothers develop it.

It can appear on anybody's skin, any time, and it doesn't consider age or gender. Many people head to chemical-based treatments to reduce the appearance of them. However, skincare experts claim home remedies can also help lighten dark spots. Here's how:
Apple Cider Vinegar
The acetic acid contained in apple cider vinegar will help lighten the pigmentation. Mix equal parts of apple cider vinegar and water, apply it to the affected area with a cotton ball, leave it on for 2–3 minutes, and then rinse with lukewarm water.
Aloe Vera
At night, before going to bed, apply the fresh aloe vera gel directly from the plant onto the pigmented areas (do not use store-bought gel). Rinse with lukewarm water the next morning.
Lemon Juice
Like apple cider vinegar, natural acids in lemon juice can help reduce dark spots. Lemon juice, however, should always be diluted with water before applying it to the skin.

Potato Juice
Bleaching agents are naturally present in potatoes, which work wonders on dark spots. Unlike the acids in citrus fruits, potato juice is much gentler and safe for sensitive skin.
Ripe Papaya
Ripe papaya is full of vitamins A and C, and for that reason, it is very effective against dark spots. Mash and apply it to your face 2-3 times a week, and you might notice results within two weeks.
