Lipstick is one of the most commonly used cosmetics, adding color to complete a makeup look and most often boosting confidence. While many lipsticks today boast active ingredients such as vitamin E, SPF, or aloe vera extract, a few still have dangerous chemicals in them that may pose risks if applied regularly.
Expert's warning
In an interview with Newspoint, Delhi-based Dharamshila Narayana Hospital's Senior Dietitian Payal Sharma explained that long-term daily use of lipstick, if not cared for properly, can prove to be harmful. She says many lipsticks contain lead, parabens, chromium, cadmium and other heavy metals, which might accumulate in the body over time.

Since lipstick stays on the lips for several hours, a bit of it may be ingested while consuming food or liquid. Sharma says this could disintegrate and affect the liver, kidneys, and hormonal system. Artificial fragrances and colors can further cause lip darkening, allergic reactions, dryness, or irritation. Too frequent applications remove the natural moisture from the lips, leaving them dry and chapped.
