The planning of the winter getaway might be quite exciting, but when leaving your dog for a few days, some preparations definitely have to be made. These will ensure that your pet stays safe, comfortable, and on a normal routine while you are away. Here are some tips:

Choose the right place

First, decide where your dog will stay: a boarding kennel, dog day care, or at a friend or relative's house. If you opt for a boarding facility, pay a visit beforehand. Observe the surroundings, cleanliness, staff behaviour, and whether there is CCTV coverage. Also, consider how well your dog will adjust to a new environment.

Introduce them in advance

If your dog is going to be boarded or left at someone else’s house, drop him off for a few hours a day or two before your trip. This will help him get used to the place, its smells, and the people. It will lessen his anxiety when you are not there.

Keep vaccinations and deworming up to date

Most boarding facilities require updated vaccination records. Ensure that the vaccinations for parvo, distemper, and bordetella are current; deworming should be done if necessary. This will reduce the risk of infections.

Provide food and routine instructions

Write out a feeding schedule, the type of food your dog eats, and any allergies they may have. If possible, provide some of their own food to prevent digestive upset from sudden changes.

Pack essential items

Include their bed, favourite toys, water and food bowls, leash, harness, medicines, and supplements. Keep everything organised in one place.

Share medical information

Provide details of any previous illnesses, current medications, allergies, or any veterinarian to contact in case of an emergency. Including two emergency contact numbers is even better.

Request routine updates

You can ask them to send in photos or short videos once or twice a day so you can feel at ease, knowing your dog is okay.
