Like diabetes or blood pressure, thyroid disorders have now become quite common. Women are generally more concerned about being affected, but men are not completely risk-free either. Medically, an overactive thyroid gland is termed hyperthyroidism, while an underactive gland is referred to as hypothyroidism. Moreover, individuals suffering for a longer period can also have the development of tumours in the thyroid gland, which might lead to cancerous results sometime later.

According to the American Cancer Society, an estimated 44,000 people in the US were diagnosed with thyroid cancer in 2025. The statistics in India are not negligible either. In India, about 1 in 285 women and 1 in 752 men are afflicted by thyroid cancer. Thyroid cancer often presents at a relatively younger age compared to other cancers.

So, what should you look out for?

A swelling at the front or lower portion of the neck: If you notice a sudden swelling or lump, don’t just ignore it. Take the advice of your doctor and take the necessary steps.

Painless lump: Most thyroid lumps are painless. If the lump is painful, it is usually less concerning. But a painless lump may still indicate a problem and, therefore, should not be ignored.

Persistent throat discomfort: Some types of thyroid cancer may yield a persistent discomfort in the throat. You might find a change in your voice, too.

Throat pain: Discomfort may be accompanied by pain. It could be painful to breathe and swallow. Pain in the throat, if persistent, should not be taken lightly.

Unexplained weight loss: If you experience weight loss without trying to diet or for other reasons, then it is a symptom of thyroid cancer. In that case, see your doctor as soon as possible.
