Prem Chopra was recently diagnosed with a severe heart condition at age 90. Aortic Stenosis often progresses silently. Doctors have paid attention to this common disease, especially in older adults.
What is Aortic Stenosis?
Aortic Stenosis develops when the aortic valve becomes narrow and stiff. This cuts off the blood flow from the heart into the aorta, the primary artery that supplies the body with oxygen-rich blood. Reasons for this are that the heart has to work harder to push the blood through the stiff valve, which causes the heart muscle to become less powerful.
According to studies, in this case, it takes a long time to develop due to calcium buildup on the valve created by ageing. This is a normal part of ageing; this buildup slowly reduces the valve action, making it challenging for blood to go through. Many of this age, they don't even realise that they have a severe disease until the symptoms start to beings to show silently.

Breathlessness, chest pain, weakness, and fainting are common symptoms of this disease. Also, studies show that if this disease is untreated, it can lead to heart failure or cardiac arrest complications.
Prem Chopra has been operated by the surgical method TAVI(Transcatheter Aortic Valve Implantation ). TAVI is a minimally invasive method that removes and replaces the stiff valve without having open-heart surgery. This surgery is especially for seniors, who may be less fit for an open-heart operation; in expert opinion, this technique is best for them. The doctor also highlighted that regular heart checkups can help detect this disease early and the life-threatening problems can be avoided, especially for senior citizens.
