Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR) struck gold at the IPL 2026 auction. They bought Australian all-rounder Cameron Green for a record ₹25 crore 20 lakh. But despite receiving a record price, this Aussie star has actually suffered a huge loss. He has lost ₹7 crore 20 lakh. Notably, KKR's old habit of buying expensive stars hasn't changed.
It was anticipated that there would be a tug-of-war for Green. The biggest battle was expected to be between KKR and CSK. That's exactly what happened. However, MI and RR also joined this fight. This season, the Knights released Andre Russell, Chennai released Sam Curran—both teams needed an all-rounder.

During the auction, Mumbai Indians raised their paddle first. However, they withdrew after reaching ₹2.6 crore. Then the battle continued between Kolkata and Rajasthan. After Green's price reached ₹13.2 crore, Rajasthan withdrew. Then Chennai entered the arena. Finally, in the battle between Kolkata and Chennai, the Knights bought Green for ₹25.2 crore. He became the most expensive player in IPL's all-time history. Green also set a record by receiving the highest price among foreign cricketers. The previous record also belonged to KKR—they had bought Mitchell Starc for ₹24.75 crore. That was the highest price for cricketers in IPL history until now. This time, Shah Rukh Khan's team broke their own record.
However, the drama in Green's story doesn't end here. Although he became IPL's most expensive player, he ultimately faced a loss of ₹7 crore 20 lakh. In other words, alongside the joy of breaking records, he encountered a bitter reality.

Why did Cameron Green face such a huge loss?
Although KKR bought Cameron Green for ₹25.2 crore, this player had to accept a loss of ₹7 crore 20 lakh. Green had to face this loss due to a BCCI rule. Actually, BCCI has made a rule for the auction that no foreign player will receive more than ₹18 crore. If any foreign player receives more than this amount, that money will go to the BCCI and will be spent for the welfare of players.
