The group stage of the ICC T20 World Cup has already delivered high drama within the opening week. Associate and emerging nations such as Nepal and Italy have grabbed headlines with spirited performances, while Zimbabwe stunned one of the pre-tournament favourites, Australia, to shake up the standings. Amid these surprises, the Afghanistan national cricket team have endured a difficult start, slipping to consecutive defeats and finding themselves under mounting pressure.
Pre-tournament projections had placed Afghanistan among the potential dark horses. With match-winners like Rashid Khan and Rahmanullah Gurbaz in their ranks, expectations were high for a deep run. Instead, narrow margins and high-intensity encounters have left them chasing momentum early in the competition.
Team analyst suffers health scare after thriller
Concerns escalated off the field following Afghanistan’s dramatic double Super Over loss to South Africa national cricket team on Thursday. The physically and emotionally draining contest reportedly took a toll on the camp. Soon after, news emerged that Casey Rama Subramanian, the team’s performance analyst based in New Delhi, had suffered a heart attack.
According to reports, he experienced chest pain earlier in the week and was rushed to a private hospital, where doctors performed an angioplasty. Fortunately, his condition has stabilised, and he is now recovering well. Team sources have indicated there is currently no cause for further concern, bringing some relief to an already strained squad.
Afghanistan’s qualification hopes hang in balance
On the cricketing front, Afghanistan’s campaign remained full of up and downs. Losses to New Zealand national cricket team and South Africa have left them without points. To keep their Super Eight ambitions alive, they must secure convincing wins in their remaining fixtures against United Arab Emirates national cricket team and Canada national cricket team.
