India’s position regarding global travel access has strengthened once again, according to the latest Henley Passport Index. As per the recently published rankings, the Indian passport has climbed to 75th place globally, a notable improvement from last year’s 85th position.
This upward movement means Indian passport holders can now travel to 56 countries without obtaining an advance visa. Some of these destinations offer completely visa-free entry, while others provide visa-on-arrival facilities. The development comes as welcome news for international travellers, particularly businesspersons, students, and tourists.
Greater mobility for Indian travellers
The improved ranking enhances India’s global mobility profile. Easier access to more destinations is expected to facilitate smoother business travel, academic exchanges, and tourism opportunities. For frequent travellers, reduced visa procedures translate into lower costs and less administrative burden.
The Henley Passport Index ranks countries based on how many destinations their passport holders can enter without a prior visa. A higher rank reflects greater international mobility and, by extension, stronger diplomatic ties and global acceptability.

Iran, Bolivia withdraw earlier facilities
Despite the overall improvement, two countries have recently withdrawn certain travel relaxations for Indian passport holders.
Iran suspended its visa-free facility for Indians in November last year. Authorities in Tehran cited concerns over human trafficking networks as the primary reason behind the decision, aiming to protect Indian nationals from potential exploitation.
In Bolivia’s case, the change is technical in nature. While visa-on-arrival facilities were previously available, the country has now made a complete e-visa system mandatory for Indian travellers.
India’s passport ranking has witnessed fluctuations in recent years. In 2024, India stood at 80th position before slipping to 85th. The current rise to 75th place is being viewed by many analysts as a sign of recovery.
Historically, India achieved its best-ever ranking of 71st place in 2006, a record that remains unbroken. Experts believe that strengthening bilateral relations and signing additional visa-waiver agreements could further improve India’s standing in the coming years.
