Harshit Rana, who has now come up as one of the prominent young fast bowlers of India, received a reprimand for an incident involving South Africa batter Dewald Brevis in the first ODI in Ranchi.

Rana was found guilty of breaching Article 2.5 of the ICC Code of Conduct, which relates to "using language, actions or gestures which disparage, or which could provoke an aggressive reaction from a batter upon his/her dismissal during an International Match." Harshit Rana was found to have breached for players and support staff. After this, the Indian fast bowler received a reprimand during his side's victory over South Africa in the first ODI in Ranchi.

In the Ranchi match, in the 22nd over of South Africa's innings, Harshit took the wicket of Dewald Bravis and was found to have gestured in the direction of the dressing room. The action was deemed to have potentially provoked an aggressive response from the batter, resulting in Harshit receiving one demerit point added to his disciplinary record.

This behaviour was Harshit's first offence in the last two years. The right-arm bowler admitted the offence and accepted the sanction proposed by Richie Richardson of the Emirates ICC Elite Panel of Match Referees. On-field umpires Jayaraman Madanagopal and Sam Nogajski, along with third umpire Rod Tucker and fourth umpire Rohan Pandit, filed the accusation. Level 1 offences result in a minimum of an official reprimand and can lead to a fine of 50% of the match fee, as well as one or two demerit points.

However, India won the match by 17 runs, and Virat Kohli scored his 52nd century.
