As India stands on the verge of a second home Test series whitewash in 12 months, Virat Kohli’s brother Vikas launched a sharp attack on head coach Gautam Gambhir and the Ajit Agarkar-led selection committee. He blamed them for India’s sudden fall in a format the team once ruled. His posts, later deleted, were made soon after India lost two quick wickets while chasing 549 on Day 4 in Guwahati, with another heavy defeat expected.

From December 2012 to October 2024, India did not lose a single home Test series — a period considered one of the best in cricket history. This era was shaped under Virat Kohli, before he handed over the captaincy to Rohit Sharma in early 2022. India were not just unbeatable at home but also became a strong travelling team, winning two Border-Gavaskar series in Australia.

What did Vikas Kohli post?

On Instagram’s Threads, Vikas Kohli pointed out how different things look now. He wrote that a team once confident of winning overseas is now struggling even in home conditions. He also hinted that the BCCI’s “unnecessary” and stubborn changes have hurt the team.

"There was a time that we played to win even in overseas conditions.... Now we are playing to save the match....even in india.. This is what happens when u try to boss around and change things unnecessary which were not broken....," he wrote in a post that was later deleted.

In another post that went viral, Vikas again targeted the BCCI, saying Rohit Sharma and Virat Kohli did not leave Test cricket but were “removed.”

He compared India’s selection decisions with South Africa’s, saying the Proteas stuck to the basics of picking a proper Test team, while India dropped senior players, added too many all-rounders, and even promoted Washington Sundar to No. 3. Vikas said he still hopes India can pull off a miracle on the final day in Guwahati, but someone needs to take responsibility for the mess.

The other post said: "So lets break it down: Team India strategy: remove senior experienced players. Remove proper 3/4/5 batmen. Play bowler at no 3. Use all allrounders…….SOUTH AFRICA STRATEGY: Play proper test match team: Specialist openers, Specialist no 3/4/5/6 batters, Specialist spinners, Specialist fast bowlers and maybe 1 all rounder …Though I really want team India to win but questions needs to be asked now… WHO IS RESPONSIBLE???"

India are now close to suffering a second home Test series whitewash in four series since Gambhir took over as head coach last July. He started with a win against Bangladesh in September, but India then lost at home to New Zealand and later gave up the Border-Gavaskar Trophy to Australia. These losses pushed India out of the race for the WTC 2023–25 final.

After the retirements of Kohli, Rohit and Ravichandran Ashwin, India drew 2–2 in England under Shubman Gill’s captaincy. Many still believe India should have beaten a weakened England side. They then defeated West Indies at home and looked stable again. But South Africa’s performance in the current series has shown that India still have major issues to solve.
