The Democratic Republic of the Congo national football team stunned the Nigeria national football team in dramatic fashion, beating them 4–3 on penalties following a 1–1 draw to advance to the inter-confederation playoffs for the 2026 FIFA World Cup 2026.

Surprise victory ends Nigeria’s playoff hopes, keeps Congo’s dream alive
Nigeria looked to be in control after taking an early lead via Frank Onyeka in the 3rd minute. But Congo responded through Meschack Elia in the 32nd minute. Nigeria’s star striker Victor Osimhen exited the match with an injury at halftime, weakening Nigeria’s attack.
In the penalty shoot-out, both sides exchanged early scores before Nigeria faltered. Congo held their nerve, with Chancel Mbemba converting the decisive spot kick and sending his team forward.

While Nigeria’s hopes of qualifying were dashed, Congo now move into the final inter-confederation playoff round in March 2026, keeping alive their hopes of returning to the World Cup for the first time since 1974.
