Raheem Sterling has been arrested on suspicion of drug-driving after his Lamborghini reportedly crashed into motorway barriers in Hampshire, adding another setback to a difficult period in the former England winger's career.

According to police, the incident occurred on the southbound carriageway of the M3 near the Minley Interchange on Thursday morning. Authorities said the luxury vehicle collided with roadside barriers, although no other vehicles were involved and no injuries were reported.

The 31-year-old was subsequently arrested on suspicion of driving while unfit through drugs, dangerous driving, possession of a Class C drug and failing to provide a specimen. He has since been released on bail pending further enquiries.

Crash sparks police investigation

According to the BBC, in a statement, Hampshire Police confirmed officers were called to the scene shortly before 9 am following reports of a Lamborghini crashing into barriers.

Investigators are now examining the circumstances surrounding the incident. While the arrest has generated significant attention, no charges have been filed at this stage and the case remains under investigation.

A source close to Sterling acknowledged the arrest but reportedly disputed suggestions that there was evidence of drugs in his system. The source also claimed the footballer has endured a challenging period both professionally and personally over the past few years.

Difficult period on and off the pitch

According to the BBC, the incident comes at a time when Sterling's football career has been marked by uncertainty. After leaving Chelsea FC earlier this year through a mutual agreement, the winger joined Feyenoord on a short-term deal until the end of the season.

His spell in the Netherlands proved underwhelming, with only a handful of appearances before the campaign concluded. Before that, Sterling struggled to secure a regular role following his high-profile move from Manchester City in 2022.

Despite those recent struggles, Sterling remains one of the most decorated English footballers of his generation, having won multiple Premier League titles during a successful seven-year spell at Manchester City.

A career filled with achievements

According to the BBC, Sterling first emerged as a promising talent at Liverpool FC before establishing himself as one of England's leading attackers. At the international level, he earned 82 caps and played a key role in several major tournaments, including the 2018 World Cup and Euro 2020.

His most recent appearance for England came at the 2022 FIFA World Cup in Qatar. Since then, he has remained outside the national team setup while attempting to revive his club career.

The police investigation is ongoing, and further developments are expected in the coming weeks.
