Birbhum put up an impressive performance at the state-level archery competition organised by the State Archery Association, winning a total of five medals. The five-day event was organised by the Kalimpong District Archery Association and was held at the Kalimpong Fair Ground from January 27. More than 400 archers from across the state took part in the competition. Birbhum was represented by 12 contestants across three categories.
Among the medal winners, Souvik Mondal won a silver medal in the senior menâs recurve category. Soumli Chowdhury secured silver in the girlsâ mini sub-junior recurve event, while Prerna Botbal won silver in the senior womenâs compound category.
Deepak Santra earned a bronze medal in the senior menâs compound category, and Diya Karmakar won bronze in the girlsâ mini sub-junior Indian round. Souvik hails from Sainthia, while the other medal winners are residents of Bolpur.

Apart from the Birbhum team, Nazmul Haque, a resident of Gangarampur village in Labhpur, Birbhum, also made the district proud by winning a bronze medal in the senior recurve event while representing the Bengal Archery Academy, Jhargram. Nazmul is an alumnus of Kurumba Mukundlal High School.
Tapas Hazra, secretary of the District Archery Association and vice-president of the State Archery Association, said, âThe athletes won medals without any government support. They have also won national-level competitions in the past.â
