Former US Open champion Daniil Medvedev has been stranded in Dubai after airspace closures linked to the escalating conflict in West Asia disrupted international flights.

Medvedev had been scheduled to return home after winning the Dubai Duty Free Tennis Championships. However, with multiple flights cancelled due to the evolving security situation in the region, the Russian tennis star remains in the United Arab Emirates along with his family and support staff.

The former world number one said in a message posted on social media that he is safe and currently staying in a friend’s apartment in Dubai while waiting for the situation to stabilise.

Medvedev added that the uncertainty surrounding air travel has made it difficult to determine when he will be able to leave the country.

Several players stranded as flights remain uncertain

Medvedev is not the only tennis player affected by the disruption. Russia’s Andrey Rublev and several other players and team members who were in Dubai for the ATP event are also facing similar travel difficulties.

ATP Tour officials said the safety of players, coaches and staff remains the priority. Players who have not yet secured travel arrangements are currently staying at the official tournament hotel and are receiving logistical assistance.

Officials said the situation is being closely monitored and travel arrangements will be organised once international flights resume normally.

Medvedev is scheduled to compete at the BNP Paribas Open in Indian Wells, California next week. However, the ongoing travel disruption has cast doubt on whether he will be able to participate in the tournament.

The conflict in West Asia has begun to affect other sporting events as well. The travel uncertainty has raised concerns about foreign players scheduled to participate in the upcoming Indian Premier League season, while global sporting bodies are also monitoring possible disruptions to international competitions.
