India’s impressive run in weightlifting at the Commonwealth Games 2026 continued on Monday as Gyaneshwari Yadav secured the silver medal in the women’s 53kg category.

The 23-year-old finished with a combined lift of 199kg, recording 88kg in the snatch and 111kg in the clean and jerk. Nigeria’s Onome Omolola Didih won the gold medal with a total of 206kg, while Canada’s Rebeka Groulx claimed bronze with 178kg.

Gyaneshwari’s podium finish also made her the fourth Indian weightlifter to win a medal at the Glasgow Games. Earlier, Mirabai Chanu won gold, while Rishikanta Singh and Raja Muthupandi bagged silver medals.

Strong start in the snatch keeps Gyaneshwari in contention

Gyaneshwari delivered a composed performance in the opening phase of the competition. She successfully lifted 82kg on her first attempt before improving to 85kg. Her third and final lift of 88kg was also successful, giving her a best snatch of 88kg.

Despite completing all three attempts, she ended the snatch round in second place as Nigeria’s Onome Omolola Didih produced a lift of 93kg to take the early lead.

Clean and jerk battle decides the medals

The clean and jerk round brought a thrilling contest for the top positions. Gyaneshwari opened with a successful lift of 103kg, briefly moving to the top of the leaderboard. However, Didih responded immediately by clearing 105kg to regain first place.

Gyaneshwari signed off in style with a successful 111kg lift on her third and final attempt, taking her overall total to 199kg and confirming the silver medal.

International success before Commonwealth Games 2026

Gyaneshwari first made a major impact at the 2022 IWF Junior World Weightlifting Championships in Heraklion, Greece.

She won three silver medals in the 49kg category, finishing on the podium in the snatch, clean and jerk, and overall total. The achievement was a landmark moment for her home state and established her among the world’s leading junior lifters.

She has also set multiple national junior records in the 49kg division, underlining her talent and consistency.
