India’s preparations for the upcoming two-Test series against Sri Lanka have suffered a setback, with all-rounder Washington Sundar unlikely to be fit in time for the opening match. Fast bowler Harshit Rana and all-rounder Nitish Kumar Reddy are also expected to miss the series, leaving the selectors with a few selection headaches before the squad is announced.
Washington Sundar races against time
Washington Sundar is currently recovering from a leg injury sustained during India’s white-ball tour of England. The all-rounder remains under the supervision of the BCCI Centre of Excellence in Bengaluru, with selectors awaiting a final medical update before taking a call on his inclusion.

Although he is doubtful for the first Test, there is still hope that he could recover in time for the second match if his rehabilitation progresses well. Washington has become a key member of India’s Test setup, particularly in overseas conditions where his off-spin and lower-order batting add valuable balance to the side.
The selectors are also monitoring the fitness of Jasprit Bumrah, who is completing a planned recovery period, while Sai Sudharsan is nearing full fitness but is yet to receive medical clearance.
Harshit and Nitish set to miss series
Harshit Rana and Nitish Kumar Reddy are unlikely to travel to Sri Lanka as both players continue their rehabilitation programmes at the Centre of Excellence. Their absence reduces India’s pace and all-round options ahead of an important Test assignment.

The selection committee is also keeping a close watch on Akash Deep and Anshul Kamboj before finalising the touring squad. Medical reports are expected to play a major role in the final selection process.
India are scheduled to begin the two-match Test series against Sri Lanka in Galle on August 15 before the second Test in Colombo later in the month. With several players still recovering from injuries, the selectors are expected to announce the squad only after receiving the latest fitness updates.
