Padma Awards 2026: Rohit Sharma, Harmanpreet Kaur steal spotlight among sports honourees

India’s sporting fraternity will have a strong presence at the Padma Awards 2026, with several athletes, coaches and sports administrators set to receive the country’s prestigious civilian honours. Leading the list are Indian women’s cricket captain Harmanpreet Kaur and tennis legend Vijay Amritraj, who headline the names from the world of sports. Here is the prominent names

Vijay Amritraj receives Padma Bhushan

Former India tennis star Vijay Amritraj has been selected for the Padma Bhushan, becoming the only sportsperson to receive the honour this year.

A pioneer of Indian tennis, Amritraj reached the quarter-finals of Wimbledon and the US Open twice during his career and later contributed as a commentator, administrator and global ambassador for sport.

Harmanpreet Kaur earns Padma Shri

India women’s cricket captain Harmanpreet Kaur has been awarded the Padma Shri after a landmark phase in her career. She guided India to the 2025 Women’s World Cup title and remains one of the most influential figures in women’s cricket. Her leadership and consistency across formats played a major role in popularising the women’s game in India.

Rohit Sharma honoured for cricket achievements

Former India captain Rohit Sharma will also receive the Padma Shri for his contribution to Indian cricket. Rohit led India to major ICC success and continued to remain a key ODI batter despite stepping away from Tests and T20Is in recent years.

Savita Punia and Praveen Kumar recognised

Indian women’s hockey goalkeeper Savita Punia and Paralympic gold medallist Praveen Kumar have also been named Padma Shri awardees. Savita has been one of the pillars of India’s women’s hockey team, while Praveen earned recognition after his success in para high jump events.

Apart From the prominent names, Veteran hockey coach Baldev Singh, sports contributor K Pajanivel and wrestling coach Vladimir Mestvirishvili are also among the recipients. Mestvirishvili, who mentored several Indian wrestlers, has been honoured posthumously.
