A video circulating on social media is being falsely linked to West Bengal in the run-up to the Assembly elections. The clip, which shows a large group of Muslim pilgrims marching together, is actually from Assam and dates back to December 2025, as fact-checked by BOOM.

The post has gained traction on X with a misleading caption attempting to frame the visuals as recent scenes from Kolkata.

The claim

The video is being widely shared with the caption, "This is not Karachi. This is not Dhaka. This is Kolkata. West Bengal Hindus have the last chance to save their State."

The messaging aligns with ongoing political narratives around alleged "infiltration" by Muslim migrants from Bangladesh, often referred to as "ghuspetiyas", with accusations directed at the ruling Trinamool Congress.

What the verification shows

A reverse image search done by BOOM using Google Lens traced the video back to December 2025. The longer version was originally posted by an Assam-based Instagram user, Sofikul (@sofikul_143_98), who identifies as a photographer and videographer, BOOM reported.

Per BOOM, the caption on the original upload reads, "Ijtema, Dhubri, Assam,” clearly indicating that the footage is from an Islamic congregation in Dhubri district.

Further checks revealed similar videos shared on Instagram, all pointing to Alamganj in Assam's Dhubri district as the location. Visual cues, including vehicles bearing Assam registration numbers, support this finding.

Context of the gathering

Reports from the time also confirm that a large religious gathering took place in the region. According to coverage by The Sentinel on December 26, 2025, a three-day North East Ijtema drew lakhs of devotees from Assam, West Bengal, and Meghalaya. The event was held at Boter Tola in Gauripur, located in Dhubri district.

The findings make it clear that the viral video is unrelated to West Bengal and is being shared with a misleading context ahead of the elections.
