Allegations of voter intimidation have surfaced in parts of the Diamond Harbour Assembly constituency in South 24 Parganas ahead of the second phase of polling. A video showing several individuals riding motorbikes and allegedly issuing warnings in a locality has gone viral, prompting swift action from the Election Commission.
Taking note of the incident, the Commission ordered immediate intervention. A complaint has been lodged at Diamond Harbour police station, and an investigation is currently underway. Officials said strict measures are being put in place to ensure that voters are not threatened or harassed during the election process.
Probe begins after video surfaces
According to officials, the video raised concerns about possible attempts to influence voters before polling. Authorities have begun verifying the authenticity of the footage and identifying those involved.
An Election Commission official stated that maintaining a free and fair voting environment is a top priority. "Any attempt to intimidate voters will be dealt with strictly. Necessary action has already been initiated," the official said.

Police have increased surveillance in the area, and further steps may be taken based on the findings of the investigation.
Poll preparedness review
The development comes just days before the second phase of elections, which will cover 142 constituencies, including Kolkata and both North and South 24 Parganas districts.
To review preparedness, a high-level coordination meeting was held on Sunday at Dhandhanya Auditorium in Kolkata. The meeting brought together key officials, including the Kolkata Police Commissioner, District Election Officers of North Kolkata, South Kolkata, and South 24 Parganas, along with general, police, and expenditure observers.

Senior administrative officials, company commanders, district force coordinators, and all Returning Officers of Kolkata were also present. Discussions focused on security arrangements, monitoring mechanisms, and ensuring smooth polling.
Meanwhile, Chief Electoral Officer Manoj Kumar Agarwal is scheduled to visit Kakdwip in South 24 Parganas to assess ground-level preparations and interact with local officials. He is also expected to visit Katwa in East Bardhaman later to review election arrangements there.
The Commission has reiterated its commitment to conducting peaceful and transparent elections across the state.
