Iran has restored gas production at three offshore platforms in the South Pars gas field, according to Pars Oil and Gas Company chief executive Touraj Dehqani, after Israeli attacks in March disrupted processing capacity at onshore facilities.

Dehqani said the platforms themselves were not physically damaged and that production from those units is now being routed to other processing plants in the region while repairs continue.

Not quite out of steam yet

South Pars, located off Iran’s southern Bushehr province, is part of the world’s largest natural gas field and is Iran’s largest source of domestic energy.

The damage hit onshore infrastructure rather than the offshore extraction platforms, with repairs continuing at affected sites including the Phase 14 refinery.

The resumed output is being diverted to alternative plants so operations can continue for now.

A measure of progress

Reporting from Tehran, Al Jazeera correspondent Tohid Asadi said the restart was “significant both symbolically and practically,” adding that it marked an “important first step forward.”

His remarks reflected the broader importance of South Pars to Iran’s energy system, as the facility remains central to domestic supply even after the strikes.

Not out of the woods just yet

The reports did not give a timeline for a full return to normal operations.

For now, the recovery appears partial: output has restarted at the offshore platforms, but the onshore processing chain that was damaged in the attacks is still being repaired. Iran has presented the restart as evidence that it can restore targeted energy infrastructure even after military strikes.
