US President Donald Trump has reportedly asked for tougher conditions in the proposed agreement with Iran, particularly on Tehran’s nuclear material and the reopening of the Strait of Hormuz.

According to reports cited by Hindustan Times, Trump discussed the matter during a two-hour meeting with his national security team in the Situation Room on Friday. No official details were released immediately after the meeting.

Officials familiar with the development told The New York Times that Trump wanted changes made to strengthen the terms of the agreement and that the revised framework had been sent back to Iran.

Focus on nuclear material and Hormuz Strait

While details of the proposed changes were not fully disclosed, Axios reported that the amendments involve stricter wording related to Iran’s enriched uranium and the reopening of the Strait of Hormuz.

Trump is reportedly keen to finalise a deal soon, though negotiations remain ongoing.

"It's more specifics about how the US gets the material and the timing," Axios quoted a senior US official as saying.

The report also said Trump wanted revised language concerning the reopening of the key shipping route in the Gulf region.

Iran is expected to respond to the updated proposal within the next few days, which could further extend negotiations.

Trump says peace deal is close

Despite the unresolved issues, Trump has continued to express confidence about reaching an agreement with Tehran.

"We are making a great deal; otherwise we'll just go back and finish it off militarily. We're close to a very good deal, and if we can make it good, otherwise we just start up with the Department of War," Trump told Fox News in an interview.

Speaking about the Strait of Hormuz, Trump said the waterway would reopen once a deal is signed.

"We've essentially defeated their military. I would rather get a deal because we can open the strait immediately upon signing. The one guarantee that I have is that there will be no nuclear weapons. They've agreed to that," he said.

Reports also suggest that the US and Iran have reached a preliminary understanding to extend the current ceasefire for 60 days while negotiations continue.
