US President Donald Trump has said negotiations with Iran are moving towards a possible agreement but warned that Washington is prepared to take alternative steps if its demands are not met.
Speaking to Fox News in an interview with Lara Trump on Saturday, Trump said any future agreement must ensure that Iran does not obtain nuclear weapons.
“The one guarantee that I have to have is that there will be no nuclear weapons, they’ve agreed to that," Trump said.
‘We’re close to a very good deal’
Trump expressed confidence that negotiations were progressing positively, while suggesting that the process required patience.

“We’re close to a very good deal," he said.
“If you’re going to be in a hurry, you’re not going to make a good deal, and slowly but surely, we’re getting, I think, what we want — and if we don’t get what we want, we’re going to end it a different way," he said.
The remarks come amid continued diplomatic efforts between Washington and Tehran following months of heightened tensions and conflict.

Trump says US avoided targeting Iran’s military fully
During the interview, Trump claimed the United States had deliberately refrained from completely targeting Iran’s military infrastructure.
“Their navy is totally gone, 100%. Their air force is totally gone, 100 per cent. Their military, we sort of left it alone, because we think that their military is somewhat, somewhat moderate," he said.
Trump also argued that fully dismantling a country’s institutions could create long-term instability.

“We’ve taken different forms of leadership out, we’ve actually left their military alone. People would be surprised to hear that, because mistakes have been made in wars where you wipe out everybody, and then you have a country that’s, you know, for 40 years can never rebuild. You look at what happened with Iraq," he said.
Trump attacks US media coverage
The US president also criticised sections of the American media during the interview.
“You have a big win in a battle, and they say you lost. It’s just a terrible thing for our country," he said.
“You knock out the entire navy and they say their navy is doing fantastically. You need a fair media. We don’t have a fair media. All they can do is lie," Trump said.
Negotiations between the US and Iran remain ongoing, though no final agreement has been announced so far.
