Do you know the strike that reportedly killed Iran’s Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei came not from the ground but from the sky, at breathtaking speed.

At the heart of the attack was a missile known as the Blue Sparrow, an air-launched weapon designed to travel high above the Earth before plunging back toward its target with devastating force.

The death of the 86-year-old cleric was confirmed by Iranian state media the following morning. Several reports noted that the missile was fired during a coordinated Israeli operation targeting senior Iranian leadership inside Tehran. The strike hit Khamenei’s heavily guarded compound on Pasteur Street, where several top officials had reportedly gathered for a meeting.

Why is Blue Sparrow so lethal?

What makes the Blue Sparrow particularly lethal is the way it travels. Unlike conventional missiles that follow a predictable arc, this weapon uses a quasi-ballistic trajectory, as military experts describe it.

The missile climbs extremely high, briefly approaching the edge of space, before re-entering the atmosphere and descending sharply onto its target.

Originally developed as part of Israel’s Sparrow missile programme, the Blue Sparrow belongs to a family that includes the Black Sparrow and Silver Sparrow systems. These missiles were initially designed to simulate Soviet-era Scud missiles during missile defence testing.

The Blue Sparrow then eventually adapted for operational strike missions capable of penetrating air-defence systems. Measuring roughly 6.5 metres in length and weighing close to 1.9 tonnes, it can travel approximately 1,240 miles or around 2,000 kilometres. It is typically launched from advanced fighter aircraft such as the McDonnell Douglas F-15 Eagle.

Once released, a booster rocket propels the missile upward at high speed. After reaching its upper trajectory, the booster separates, and the missile re-enters the atmosphere, diving steeply toward its intended target.

Notably, the strike itself formed part of a broader Israeli campaign reportedly known as Operation Epic Fury.

How Israel launched their Blue Sparrow

Israeli fighter aircraft reportedly took off shortly after 7:30 am Iran time and reached their launch positions roughly two hours later. At around 9:40 am, approximately 30 precision-guided munitions, including several Blue Sparrow missiles, were launched toward Khamenei’s compound and nearby facilities.

Videos circulating on social media soon showed thick smoke rising from multiple areas across Tehran, including the Supreme Leader’s residence. Satellite imagery later suggested that several buildings within the complex had sustained severe damage.

Israeli intelligence agencies, including Mossad and the cyber-intelligence unit Unit 8200, had reportedly spent years mapping the movements of Khamenei’s security detail and tracking activity around the compound.

The operation included hacking traffic cameras and monitoring communications across Tehran, allowing analysts to build a detailed “pattern of life” of the Iranian leadership.
