Just this week, US President Donald Trump dismissed Homeland Security Secretary Kristi Noem and announced that Oklahoma Republican Senator Markwayne Mullin will be nominated to take over the role.
Trump announced a social media post on Thursday, only two days after Noem faced intense questioning from lawmakers on Capitol Hill. During the hearing, members from both the Republican and Democratic parties pressed her on the administration’s immigration policies and enforcement strategies.

Despite removing her from the Cabinet, Trump indicated that Noem would continue to play a role in his administration. He stated that he would appoint Noem as a ‘Special Envoy for The Shield of the Americas,’ a newly announced security initiative focused on addressing strategic and security challenges across the Western Hemisphere.
How rich is Kristi Noem?
Forbes reported that Kristi Noem’s net worth is estimated to be at least $5 million. The estimate is based on property records and financial disclosures filed during her time in public office.
Documents submitted to the US Office of Government Ethics in August 2024 show that Noem holds a diversified portfolio that includes mutual funds, index funds, exchange-traded funds and retirement accounts.
These investments were valued between $174,000 and $560,000 at the time of disclosure. Now, in addition, the filings indicated that Noem held cash savings that could reach up to $265,000. Her asset list also included livestock and farming equipment, estimated to be worth as much as $100,000.
However, much of the family’s financial strength comes from the business holdings of her husband, Bryon Noem.
Bryon Noem owns Noem Insurance LLC, an insurance brokerage firm valued between $1 million and $5 million. He also holds investments in commercial real estate worth up to $500,000, along with equity fund holdings including ETFs and index funds estimated between $67,000 and $315,000.

What was Kristi Noem’s salary as Homeland Security chief?
During her tenure as Secretary of the US Department of Homeland Security, Noem earned an annual salary of $253,100 in 2026. This is a standard compensation for Level 1 executive positions in the federal government and was slightly higher than the $250,600 salary for the same role in 2025.
While serving as governor of South Dakota, Noem’s annual salary was approximately $122,000.
Earlier, when she served as a member of the United States House of Representatives between 2011 and 2019, she earned $174,000 per year.
