Donald Trump and Xi Jinping are set to meet in Beijing on Thursday, placing key global flashpoints like Iran, trade tensions and Taiwan high on the agenda. The two leaders will hold talks at 10:00 am local time inside the Great Hall of the People, where Xi is expected to host Trump with full state honours. The meeting will be followed by a formal banquet in the evening. Trump is also scheduled to visit the Temple of Heaven, a UNESCO World Heritage site linked to imperial-era rituals.

Trump landed in Beijing late Wednesday aboard Air Force One, accompanied by top American business leaders, including Elon Musk and Jensen Huang. His arrival was marked by a ceremonial reception featuring hundreds of Chinese students waving flags and chanting greetings.

As per a report by NDTV, the US president is expected to prioritise economic outcomes during the visit, particularly agreements involving agriculture, aviation and broader market access for American companies.

Trade tensions and tariff truce

Trade remains a central concern, following a prolonged tariff battle that saw both countries impose duties exceeding 100 per cent. The leaders are likely to discuss extending a one-year tariff truce agreed upon during their last meeting in South Korea in October.

After his 2017 visit to China, Trump introduced sweeping tariffs on Chinese imports. Similar measures were reinstated after his return to the White House last year, escalating tensions before a temporary pause was reached.

Iran and strategic concerns

Iran is also expected to feature prominently in discussions. As per the NDTV reports, Trump stated he expects a “long talk” with Xi on the issue but added, “I don't think we need any help with Iran”.

Meanwhile, Marco Rubio indicated a different approach, saying, “We hope to convince them to play a more active role in getting Iran to walk away from what they are doing now, and trying to do now in the Persian Gulf.”

Taiwan and broader geopolitical issues

Taiwan remains another sensitive topic. Trump said earlier he would raise US arms sales to the island, a move that could draw close attention from regional allies and Taipei.

Beyond these, both sides are expected to address issues such as rare earth exports, artificial intelligence competition and overall economic ties.

The visit marks the first trip to Beijing by a US president in nearly a decade. Talks will continue on Friday with a working lunch and tea session before Trump departs for Washington.
