The United Kingdom has introduced a new “no permission, no travel” system for visitors from several countries, including the US, Australia, Canada and France. From February 25, travellers who earlier did not require a visa for short stays will now need an Electronic Travel Authorisation (ETA) before boarding their flight or transport to Britain.
The government led by Prime Minister Keir Starmer says the move is aimed at strengthening and modernising the immigration system. Without an approved ETA, travellers will not be allowed to board their transport to the UK, unless they are officially exempt.

The rule applies to visitors from 85 countries who do not require a visa for short stays of up to six months and do not already hold a valid UK immigration status.
What is an ETA and how does it work?
An ETA is a digital travel permission issued by UK authorities. It is not a visa and does not guarantee entry into the country- it only allows a person to travel to the UK.

Once approved, the ETA permits multiple visits for up to six months at a time for purposes such as tourism, business or short-term study. It remains valid for two years or until the passport expires, whichever comes first.
The current fee for an ETA is £16, though the government has indicated it may rise to £20 in the future. Applicants must provide passport details, contact information, a photograph and answer a few questions. Most decisions are automated and can be received within minutes through the UK ETA app, available on Google Play and the Apple App Store.
If an ETA application is rejected, the applicant will be informed of the reason. They can apply again, but there is no appeal process. If refused, the person must apply for a visa instead.
What about British and dual citizens?
British and Irish citizens are exempt from the ETA requirement, including those with dual nationality. However, they must travel using a valid British passport or a Certificate of Entitlement.
If a British passport is close to expiry, it can be renewed through GOV.UK. The UK government says this approach is similar to entry requirements followed by countries like the US, Australia and Canada.
