Three crew members of British Airways were hospitalised after reportedly eating marijuana sweets given to them by an airline passenger recently.
According to The Sun, the incident took place when the crew was flying from London Heathrow to Los Angeles last week. The crew members had no idea they were consuming sweets containing 300 milligrams of THC, which is the main psychoactive ingredient of cannabis.
British Airways has opened an investigation into the incident internally and is attempting to identify the passenger who was passing around the sweets.
Sweets shared after landing
The confectionery was not consumed during the flight. The crew allegedly ate the sweets after they landed in Los Angeles, while they were on their way to their hotel in a crew bus.
It is customary to share chocolates or sweets with the flight crew as a sign of appreciation. However, these flight crew members seemed unaware that the chocolates contained cannabis, a source told the Sun.
Shortly after consuming the sweets, three crew members began to feel unwell.
Sudden and alarming symptoms
As per a report by the Hindustan Times, “By the time the group had reached the crew hotel, three staff members who had numerous sweets began suffering ‘out-of-body’ experiences.” “They felt totally out of control and became panicked and scared. Their symptoms became worse, and the trio were taken to hospital for treatment”, the source said.
By the time the crew reached their hotel, their symptoms were heightened. The trio was taken to the hospital for treatment.
“It is a godsend in this case, the sweets in question were not shared out among the crew until they had arrived in the US”, The Sun quoted the source as saying. “They were consumed in the crew bus after touchdown, and tired staff gratefully gobbled them up.”

Investigation underway
British Airways has taken this issue seriously and is trying to identify the passenger who handed out the sweets. If caught, strict police action may be taken against this passenger. The crew members cannot be held responsible for the contents, as they were unaware of the content.
“Some people might find this incident funny, but it is being treated very seriously by BA”, the source further said. “If an entire crew became incapacitated at 30,000 feet after ingesting deadly drugs, the consequences don’t bear thinking about.” “Bosses are trying to trace the passenger who tried to get the crew high. The flyer could face multiple police charges”, the source stated.
However, the airline has not announced further details of the ongoing investigation.
