A shooting incident occurred on Sunday at the residence of Indiana Judge Steven Meyer during which he and his wife, Kimberly Meyer, were shot at. This event transpired just a few weeks after the Judge announced his plans to retire.

Law enforcement officials responded immediately to reports of a shooting at the location of the Meyers residence and were dispatched to Lafayette, near Purdue University campus, somewhere around 2:17 pm, on Sunday. Judge Steven Meyer has gained recognition due to his judicial service related to multiple high-profile and highly-publicised cases in addition to his involvement in multiple civil rights matters, including the case of dispute between Ukrainian adoptee Natalia Grace Barnett and her American family.

The injuries

The Lafayette Police Department stated that the shooting on Sunday left Meyer injured with an arm injury and his wife with an injury to her hip. The shooter gained Meyer and his wife’s attention by pretending to have found their dog before shooting through a door and running away from the scene of the crime.

Search for shooter launched

The authorities have begun an extensive search for the shooter, with the LPD enlisting several additional agencies to assist: the Indiana State Police, the Tippecanoe County Sheriff’s Department, the West Lafayette Police Service, the Tippecanoe County Prosecutor’s Office and the Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI).

At the couple's residence, police recovered shell casings but the shooter's identity remains unknown. According to NYT sources, police have confirmed that both the judge and his wife are in stable condition.

Support pours in

Many lawmakers have shown their support for Indiana state court judge Meyer and his wife as investigation into the shooting case continues.

State Supreme Court Chief Justice Loretta Rush said she was "deeply grateful" that the couple had survived.

"I worry about the safety of all our judges. As you work to peacefully resolve more than 1 million cases a year, you must not only feel safe, you must also be safe," Rush was quoted as saying by Independent.

"Any violence against a judge or a judge’s family is completely unacceptable. As public servants, you are dedicated to the rule of law," Rush added.

Other cases of attacks

The Meyers shooting was the most recent incidence of a violent attack directed towards lawmakers. In 2025, there was an arson attack on the house of Pennsylvania Governor Josh Shapiro and the murder of Democratic Representative Melissa Hortman along with her husband Mark in Minnesota.

The same day as the Hortman shooting, Democratic State Senator John Hoffman and his wife Yvette were shot as well. Thankfully, both of the Hoffmans survived.

Charlie Kirk, a controversial right-wing commentator, was shot and killed that year at an event in Utah.
