She had witnessed the First and Second World Wars – the 141-year-old tortoise 'Gramma' died at the San Diego Zoo. This tortoise was of the Galapagos species. According to sources, Gramma died on November 20. Her death has cast a shadow of grief across the zoo.
According to zoo authorities, it is not known exactly when the tortoise arrived at the San Diego Zoo. However, it is estimated that she was brought from the Bronx Zoo to San Diego in 1928 or 1931.

Gramma was quite popular among visitors for her calm and shy nature. The staff responsible for her care lovingly called her the 'Queen of the Zoo'. The zoo authorities also said that due to her advanced age, Gramma had developed multiple bone problems. That was the cause of her death.
After Gramma's death, many people have shared her photos on social media. Many have written that they had seen Gramma in their childhood. Even when they came to visit the zoo with their children many years later, Gramma could be seen in the same place.
Galapagos tortoises can live for more than 100 years in the wild. However, under human care, they can live even longer. The record for the longest living animal in the world belonged to the tortoise 'Harriet'. She lived for 175 years in a zoo in Australia. She died in 2006.
