A gas explosion shook Oneida County in upstate New York on Tuesday, leaving at least five people seriously injured at the Abundant Life Fellowship Church in Boonville. The blast was so intense that the entire church building was reduced to rubble within moments. Among the injured is a firefighter, and at least two people are reported to be in critical condition.

Early warning signs and rapid response

According to local administration sources, a strong gas odour was detected inside the church around 10:23 AM local time. Four members, including the pastor, reported the smell to authorities. The Boonville Fire Department responded quickly, but the explosion occurred just as firefighters were entering the building. Eyewitnesses said the upper portion of the church was virtually blown away, producing a deafening sound, and the surrounding area was engulfed in black smoke.

Injuries and hospitalisation

A firefighter and a church member sustained serious injuries and were admitted to Wynn Hospital in Utica in critical condition. Three others suffered burns but were relatively less severely injured. New York State Police reported that preliminary investigations suggest the explosion was accidental, caused by a natural gas leak. No evidence of sabotage has been found.
