Since the escalation between the United States and Iran, the most consistent feature of Donald Trump’s communication has been inconsistency. From declaring outright victory to hinting at peace negotiations, his messaging has shifted dramatically within short spans of time. At various points, Trump has claimed that the US had already achieved its objectives, even going as far as saying Iran had been “blown off the map”. Yet, the continuation of hostilities and tensions, particularly around the strategically vital Strait of Hormuz, contradicts such assertions.
From threats to negotiations
Trump’s rhetoric has oscillated between hardline threats and diplomatic overtures. In one instance, he issued an expletive-laden warning demanding Iran reopen the Strait of Hormuz, underscoring a confrontational stance. Shortly after, however, he spoke of ongoing negotiations and even described Iran’s counterproposal as “significant”, though insufficient. These claims were met with scepticism from Tehran, with Iranian officials publicly dismissing the idea of active negotiations. The mixed messaging has added to confusion over whether Washington is pursuing escalation or de-escalation.
Contradictions over Hormuz
The Strait of Hormuz remains central to the standoff, given its importance as a global energy corridor. Interestingly, Trump at one point downplayed its significance, stating that the US did not need the passage, even as his administration continued to pressure Iran to reopen it. He also extended deadlines related to the Strait’s reopening, claiming the move was made at Iran’s request, a claim denied by Iranian authorities. These contradictions have further complicated the narrative around US objectives in the region.

Praise amid pressure
Despite repeated claims that Iran’s military strength had been significantly weakened, Trump has also described Iranians as “tough” and “capable fighters”. This acknowledges the adversary’s strength while asserting dominance. It reflects a broader pattern in his statements during the conflict.

Strategic ambiguity or inconsistency?
The evolving tone of Donald Trump has raised questions about whether this approach is a deliberate strategy aimed at keeping Iran off balance or simply inconsistent communication during a high-stakes geopolitical crisis.
