West Bengal post-poll violence reaches Calcutta High Court, hearing on Tuesday

A PIL on alleged post-election violence in Bengal was mentioned before Calcutta High Court, which will hear the matter on Tuesday.

A public interest litigation alleging post-election violence in several parts of West Bengal was mentioned before the Calcutta High Court on Monday. The petitioner sought an urgent hearing over incidents reported from districts including Murshidabad, Medinipur, and Kolkata.

The Division Bench of Chief Justice Sujoy Paul and Justice Parthasarathi Sen said the matter would be heard on Tuesday.

The Assembly elections in Bengal were held in two phases on April 23 and April 29. Though polling passed without any major casualty, allegations of violence began surfacing from different districts soon after voting ended.

Allegations of violence from multiple districts

Reports of clashes, vandalism, arson, and attacks have emerged from several areas in recent days. Allegations include damage to houses and shops, forcible occupation of party offices, and physical assaults.

Four deaths linked to alleged post-election violence have also been reported.

In Kolkata's Beleghata area, tension spread after the death of Trinamool worker Biswajit Pattanayak, aged 42.

In Santoshpur village of Nanur in Birbhum, allegations surfaced that Trinamool booth president Abir Sheikh, aged 40, was murdered.

A BJP worker, Madhu Mandal, aged 46, died in the Baligari area of Rajarhat. In another incident, allegations emerged that BJP supporter Yadab Kar, aged 45, was beaten to death in Udaynarayanpur in Howrah district.

Police have started investigations into the incidents.

High Court to hear matter on Tuesday

The PIL was filed amid growing political tension over the incidents reported after the election results.

Leaders from the ruling Bharatiya Janata Party, opposition All India Trinamool Congress, and the state police administration have appealed for peace and restraint.

Despite those appeals, allegations of violence have continued to emerge from different districts.

Against this backdrop, the matter has now reached the High Court, which is scheduled to hear the case on Tuesday.
