The Delhi High Court has stepped in to preserve the estate of late businessman Sunjay Kapur, ordering a freeze on his assets amid a growing inheritance dispute within the family. The interim direction, issued on April 30, seeks to maintain the status quo while the court examines competing claims over a will said to be his final testament.
The case has brought into focus a complex legal battle involving Kapur’s widow, Priya Kapur, his children from his marriage to Karisma Kapoor, and his mother, Rani Kapur. At the centre of the dispute is the validity of the will and how the estate should be distributed.
Court steps in to protect estate
The matter came up before Justice Jyoti Singh, who passed the interim order in response to a petition filed by Kapur’s children. They have questioned the authenticity of the will and sought safeguards to ensure that the estate is not altered or depleted before a final decision is reached.
By freezing the assets, the court has effectively prevented any sale, transfer or restructuring of property linked to the estate. Such measures are typically seen in cases where there is a risk of irreparable financial changes during ongoing litigation.
Family dispute turns legal battle
The dispute reflects deeper tensions within the family, with multiple stakeholders asserting their claims over the late businessman’s assets. While the children have challenged the will, other family members are expected to defend its legitimacy as the proceedings continue.
Inheritance cases of this nature often involve detailed scrutiny of documents, intent, and legal compliance. The involvement of high-value assets further adds to the complexity and stakes of the matter.

What lies ahead in the case
With the interim protection now in place, the focus will shift to the examination of evidence and arguments from both sides. The court is expected to hear further submissions in the coming hearings, which will determine the future course of the estate.

For now, the freeze ensures that the assets remain intact, allowing the legal process to unfold without external interference. The case underscores how disputes over wills can evolve into prolonged legal challenges, particularly when significant wealth and multiple heirs are involved.
