Why are snake sightings rising in Kerala? Here's what you need to know

Forest department personnel in various parts of Kerala have been put on high alert due to an increase in incidents involving snakes in recent times.

Such an increase in snake bites and even sightings has caused fear among the populace, especially those living in rural or semi-urban areas.

High temperatures contribute to increased movement of snakes in Kerala

This fear is believed to be due to the warmer weather, which drives snakes out of their natural environments in order to seek out cool and humid places close to humans. In such seasons, human encounters with snakes become quite common.

Citizens are advised against panicking when they encounter any snakes

There have been several incidents in different districts that include snake bites and snake rescues. These factors are believed to prompt the department to increase its level of awareness regarding such problems.

Efforts are made to ensure that snakes are not handled inappropriately

Authorities have also urged the public to remain cautious, avoid disturbing bushes or debris near homes, and immediately report snake sightings to trained rescue personnel, per The Indian Express. Awareness campaigns are being reinforced to reduce panic and prevent mishandling of snakes, which can increase risk.

Forest officials have reiterated that most snakes entering residential areas are non-aggressive and that safe rescue protocols should be followed to avoid unnecessary harm to both people and wildlife.
