Nagpur’s Dr Babasaheb Ambedkar International Airport is set for a major boost after key approvals linked to airport development and infrastructure expansion in Maharashtra, per a report by News18.

Officials believe the move could significantly improve passenger connectivity, cargo movement, and aviation services in Central India.

Nagpur airport moves closer to becoming a major hub

Nagpur Airport has increasingly emerged as an important aviation centre because of its strategic location and rising aircraft traffic. Recent infrastructure upgrades and government-backed expansion plans are expected to further improve its operational capacity.

The airport is part of the Multi-modal International Cargo Hub and Airport at Nagpur (MIHAN) project, one of Maharashtra’s largest infrastructure initiatives. The project aims to develop Nagpur into a major cargo and passenger transit hub with integrated road, rail, and air connectivity.

Infrastructure upgrades expected to improve operations

According to aviation officials, Nagpur Airport recently achieved another milestone with the installation of a midpoint Runway Visual Range (RVR) system. The system is expected to improve aircraft operations during low-visibility conditions such as fog and heavy rain.

“The midpoint RVR will enhance the accuracy of runway visibility assessment and provide better operational support to pilots, ATC and airport authorities,” Aerodrome Meteorological Office director Rizwan Ahmed was quoted as saying by News18.

Officials said the technology upgrade would help reduce weather-related disruptions and strengthen aviation services at the airport.

MIHAN project expected to boost economy

The MIHAN project includes plans for cargo facilities, logistics infrastructure, IT parks, and a Special Economic Zone spread across thousands of hectares. The development is expected to improve trade and create employment opportunities in the Vidarbha region.

Reports also noted that Nagpur’s location at the geographical centre of India makes it suitable for cargo redistribution and transit operations. The airport has already seen growth in aircraft movements and passenger handling capacity in recent years.

Officials believe the airport’s expansion could improve connectivity between major Indian cities and strengthen Nagpur’s role in regional aviation networks. Increased infrastructure and operational capabilities are also expected to support passenger traffic and cargo handling in the coming years.
